Ask your supplier for CBAM emissions data

Your EU buyer needs the emissions of the steel or aluminium you buy in, not just your own. Fill in a few fields to get a clear request your mill can answer, ready for email or WhatsApp.

CBAM emissions data for the [material] delivered in 2026

Dear Sir or Madam,

We are [your company]. We make goods from the [material] you supply and export them to customers in the European Union. Under the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), our customers must declare the emissions embedded in these goods, including the emissions from producing the [material].

Without your figures, the EU default value plus a mark-up must be used, which usually costs more than real figures. Please send us the following for the [material] you delivered to us in 2026:

1. Name, address and country of the installation (plant) where it was produced
2. Production route, for example blast furnace, DRI and electric arc furnace, scrap-based electric arc furnace or induction furnace
3. Specific direct embedded emissions, in tonnes of CO2e per tonne of product
4. Electricity used per tonne (MWh/t) and the emission factor of that electricity
5. The verification report from an accredited verifier, or the date you expect to have it
6. A contact person for questions about these figures

Please reply by [date].

If you already fill in the Commission's communication template for installation operators, a copy of it gives us everything we need.

If you cannot provide verified figures for this year, please let us know, so that we can plan with our customers.

Thank you,
[your name]

Why your supplier's figures matter

For a steel or aluminium product made from bought-in material, most of the embedded emissions come from that material. Your buyer's CBAM declaration has to include them, so your own figures are incomplete without your supplier's.

If the supplier sends nothing, the EU default value for its country is used for the material, plus a mark-up that rises from 10% in 2026 to 30% from 2028. Real, verified figures are usually lower.

Tips for getting an answer

  • Ask early. Mills get the same request from many customers and need time to have their figures verified.
  • Make sending verified emissions data a condition in new purchase orders and contracts.
  • If a supplier can't help this year, note it and use the default value for its country. Ask again next year.
  • Keep every reply and verification report with your records. Your verifier will ask to see them.
